Dear Jack: My Dog Wants a California King
Chapel Hill, NC – Today, Dear Jack answers a question about a dog, restless sleep and the biggest bed money can buy.
Dear Jack,
I am only 5 feet tall and presently sleep in a queen size bed. The problem is that my Newfoundland “puppy” Klein sleeps with me. He now weighs 126 pounds and still growing. In the middle of the night when Klein dreams of chasing a cat, his crazy movements practically knock me out of bed!
I think the poor boy needs more room. I know I do. I want to get the biggest, most spacious bed available.
Would you recommend a California King?
Sincerely,
Dog Tired in Cary
Dear Dog Tired,
A Standard King mattress is 76″ x 80″ and is also known as the Eastern King. A King is about 16″ wider than a Queen bed. Both are about 80″ long. The Eastern King is the only bed to give each person the same width as a Twin bed. In fact you can push 2 Extra-Long Twin beds together to be the same size as an Eastern King.
A California King is 72″ x 84″ (also known as a Western King). This mattress is 12″ wider than a Queen bed and adds 4″ in length. But is is 4″ narrower than the Standard King. This may be a better choice for taller adults (or a really tall pet). Also note, finding sheets to accommodate the California King is sometimes a challenge.
If you are looking to put more sleeping distance between you and Klein, I would recommend a Standard King mattress. It is the widest mattress available. The Standard King will give you 16 more inches of room than you presently have with your Queen mattress.
Pleasant dreams,
Jack
